When rules overlap

What happens when more than one rule matches the same product, and how to control it.

Updated 1 min read

A product can match several rules, for example a store-wide 10% sale and a bulk rule. The plugin then picks one price for each cart line.

Best price for the customer (default)

Every matching rule works out a price, and the lowest one wins. Discounts never add up in this mode. If two rules give exactly the same price, the rule higher in your list wins (it is the one recorded on the order).

Example

Rules: “Summer sale” 10% off everything, and “Buy more, save more” 20% off for 5+. A shopper buys 1 mug at $18: the sale gives $16.20, the bulk rule nothing, so they pay $16.20. At 5 mugs the bulk rule gives $14.40, which is lower, so they pay $14.40 each.

Pro: other ways to resolve overlaps

Pro adds two more options under Settings → When rules overlap:

SettingWhat happens10% then 30% on $50
Best price for the customerLowest price wins.$35.00
The rule highest in the listThe first matching rule in your list wins, even if another is cheaper.$45.00
Stack all discounts, in list orderEach matching rule applies to the price the previous one produced.$31.50

Careful with stacking: Stacking can add up to large discounts. Check a few products with the live preview after switching it on.

Buy X get Y, cart discounts and free gifts

These Pro types work on the cart as a whole and run after item prices are decided. So a Buy X get Y deal uses the already-discounted item price, and a cart discount is worked out on the discounted items. See Buy X get Y and Cart discounts.
